I Love Performing Weddings!

Posted in Readings by Richard

It is a wonderful calling to be a wedding minister!  I get to spend my time with happy people at joyous occasions.  Often, these events turn into family reunions with long-lost relatives arriving from around the country and, in many cases, from around the world.  Add to this the interesting locations and ceremony variations couples request and you’ve got the making of an incredible event! What could be better?

The greater Houston area boasts an almost limitless variety of wedding locations.  From the beaches of Bolivar and Galveston to gleaming, downtown, high-rise rooftops the third coast offers unique settings to enhance any wedding theme and dream. With a little imagination, almost any environment can be transformed into the perfect wedding setting. Although I’ve lived here for more years than I care to remember, brides and grooms are constantly reintroducing me to my hometown, causing me to see familiar sights with fresh eyes.

I’ve see an airplane hanger turned into a chapel with biplanes serving as silent sentinels. On Clear Lake there are at least two entities offering nautical nuptials.  You can choose between a sleek modern yacht and a graceful, old-fashioned paddle wheeler. Elegant stately mansions grace many of the smaller towns around Houston, and in the city itself, opening themselves to weddings and receptions with an Old World flair.  Many of our parks offer quiet, verdant vistas for the casual, intimate exchange of vows and, of course, nothing says intimate like a home setting – inside or out.

The Rose Garden in Hermann Park has long been a favorite venue.  With row upon vivid row of gorgeous flower beds surrounding the wedding party, it’s easy to believe that the entire world is celebrating the happy occasion! (The Rose Emporium in Brenham offers a similar experience).  I’ve recently been asked to officiate at two weddings in Hermann Park that will change forever how I see this venerable site.  The Houston Zoo and the Museum of Natural Science will both provide a familiar, yet totally original, setting in which to tie the knot.  Once again, I’m being reintroduced to a city I thought I knew!

A wise person once said, “Imagine you just won the lottery.  What would you do tomorrow?  Go out and do that!”

I know exactly what I would do the day after I won the lottery.  Perform a beautiful wedding at a familiar location for a couple very much in love; seeing this site, with fresh eyes, as if for the very first time.
